The Name Cicero

Marcus Tullius Cicero lived during the renaissance of Roman political and social thought. He distinguished himself as a leading proponent of republican-based democratic government and his writings and speeches would later provide a foundation for not only the U.S. Constitution but many other countries' framework of democratic government. Cicero is generally perceived as one of the most versatile minds of ancient Rome. He introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek Philosophy and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary. He was a brilliant philosopher, an ardent protector of republican government, and a skillful strategist.

Some of his most well known writings include:

  • The welfare of the people is the ultimate law.
  • The first duty of a man is the seeking after and the investigation of truth.
  • There is no duty more obligatory than the repayment of kindness.
  • Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.
  • Genius is fostered by energy.
  • In anger nothing right nor judicious can be done.
  • A bad peace is always better than a good war.
  • A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.
  • A room without books is like a body without a soul.
  • Advice is judged by results, not by intentions.
  • He only employs his passion who can make no use of his reason.
  • Let the punishment match the offense.
  • To be content with what one has is the greatest and truest of riches.
