The Future of Utah Public Education Depends on Medicaid Reform
Deseret News - (1/23/2011)
Utah ranks 51st among all U.S states and the District of Columbia in per pupil K-12 education spending. At $5,765 per student, our state falls 20% below the second lowest spending state, Idaho, which spends $6,931 per student. And the national average is 78% percent higher for per pupil spending than it is in Utah.
Last week, Education Week ranked Utah 41st in the nation for education performance and policy. To be clear, education funding itself is not the sole determinant of education quality (a cursory look at Newark, NJ schools, which spend over $22,000 a student, illustrates this point). But with the effective implementation and tracking of the right strategic plan, adequate per pupil spending undoubtedly can be an important driver in effective education.
